Is patch testing compulsory for lash extensions?
Patch testing for eyelash extensions is recommended but it isn’t always compulsory.
The correct way to patch test is to apply 3-5 lash extensions per eye. Perform this a minimum of 48 hours before the appointment to allow time in case a positive reaction develops.
The eyelash adhesive should never come into contact with the skin, only the natural lashes. Whilst we advise patch testing, it’s important to know that it does not guarantee a negative reaction. 3-5 lashes applied on the corner of each eye, is very different to the 70-120 per eye that you will apply during a full set. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include, swelling of the eyelids, itching, redness and sore eyes.
If a client does experience a reaction, advise them to take an antihistamine and remove the eyelash extensions as soon as possible.
